The court succumbed to the pressure of radicals and extended the arrest of the director Oleg Sagan

On May 14th a preparatory hearing connected to the case of the Ukrainian director and camera operator Oleg Sagan took place in the Solomensky court of the city of Kiev. "Activists" from the “C14” group led by Evgeny Karas - who shouted insults towards the accused, and threatened and provoked the attendees - were present at the hearing.

In particular, Evgeny Karas, in an offensive manner, claimed that Oleg Sagan would be exchanged for the Ukrainian citizens imprisoned in the Russian Federation. And also called the defendant offensive words: "creature", "separatist", "bastard". In addition, the leader of "C14" Evgeny Karas entered into verbal exchanges with the lawyers of the defendant and the head of the "Institute of Legal Policy and Social Protection of Irina Berezhnaya" Elena Berezhnaya.

Several police squads arrived at the court for security reasons. However, they did not intervene in the conflict.

The question of considering the motion of the prosecutor concerning the prolongation of the measure of restraint imposed on the defendant, as well as the question of appointing a judicial review on the basis of the indictment, was on the agenda of the court hearing.

The judicial collegium, under the pressure of the "activists" of the “C14” group, made the decision to prolong the defendant’s term of detention for the next 2 months. Then the process was adjourned until 14:30 so that the ambulance that had arrived to the court could examine Oleg Sagan, whose health had sharply worsened after the attacks of radicals.

As a reminder, the 63-year-old director and camera operator Oleg Sagan was detained in November 2018. He is accused of infringing on the territorial integrity of Ukraine according to Part 2 of Article 110 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. On May 2nd 2019 the indictment was showed to Oleg Sagan, and the case was transferred to the Solomensky court of Kiev.

Oleg Sagan repeatedly complained about torture and health problems because of the conditions of keeping in the pre-trial detention center.

In April 2019 journalists published the letter of the 63-year-old director Oleg Sagan addressed to the UN and OSCE. In the letter the defendant talks about the awful conditions and torture in Kherson pre-trial detention center No. 28, and asks to help his ill wife, who remained almost without means for existence.
