Kirill Vyshinsky remains in custody, his case was transferred to the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court

On March 20th the Criminal Cassation Court of the Supreme Court of Ukraine held a hearing in Kiev on the complaint about the illegality of the detention of the journalist Kirill Vyshinsky in May 2018. The court partially granted the motion of the defence, referring the case to the Grand Chamber. The date of consideration has not yet been appointed.

The defence of Kirill Vyshinsky asked the court during the hearing on the complaint about his arrest to allow the journalist to be near his lawyers, and not in a glass box.

The defenders argued their motion with the fact that Vyshinsky still has no sentence, and the defence wants to talk with him. The prosecutors in the process did not object to the satisfaction of the motion, thus the court granted the motion of the defence.

The Russian ombudswoman, Tatiyana Moskalkova, also attended the Supreme Court meeting on March 20th.

As was reported by “Uspishna Varta”, on March 5 Kirill Vyshinsky, the chief editor of RIA “Novosti Ukraine”, was presented with an indictment and a register of pre-trial investigation materials. A preparatory meeting on his case is scheduled for March 26th at the Podolsky court in Kiev.

Vyshinsky will be located in the Lukyanovka pre-trial detention center in Kiev, where he was transferred from Kherson. Earlier, on February 8th, the Kherson City Court granted the motion of the prosecutor and once again extended the measure of restraint imposed on Vyshinsky in the form of detention until April 8th.

Recall that the chief editor of RIA “Novosti Ukraine”, Kirill Vyshinsky, was detained on 15.05.2018 on suspicion of state treason (part 1 of article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), which does not stipulate an alternative measure of restraint except for detention. This article stipulates a sanction of up to 15 years in prison. The journalist has been kept in the Kherson pre-trial detention center without an alternative since May of last year.

Kirill Vyshinsky himself, in an interview with the human rights defenders of “Uspishna Varta” in December 2018, denied all accusations and said that the case against him is political persecution.
