Activists from “C14” attacked the Chairman of a district election commission and disrupted its work

The work of district election commission (DEC) No. 24 in the city of Dneper was disrupted under the pressure of representatives of the far-right group “C14“, and its chairman Viktor Marchenko now faces dismissal.

The scandal happened because of the appointment of the head of the Union of the Soviet Officers organisation Viktor Marchenko to the position of the chairman of district election commission No. 24 on the quota of the Ukrainian presidential candidate Sergey Kaplin.

On February 21st the commission was supposed to swear in its members. However, it did not manage to complete its work because representatives of the “C14” group, who did not allow the chairman Marchenko to make any actions concerning the commission, came to a meeting and later attacked him.

A considerable part of the members of the district election commission refused to or simply didn’t attend the meeting. And the present members of the commission, under the pressure of radicals, took a break until Friday. It is supposed that during this time the Central Election Commission (CEC) will make changes to its structure.

The “C14” group reported that the chairman of district election commission No. 24 Viktor Marchenko resigned and went to the police to write a statement about the attack on him. Complaints against the head of the district election commission arose because of his alleged pro-Russian and “separatist” position.

As a reminder, on January 18th the “Uspishna Varta“ human rights platform received from the CEC the status of an official observer for the 2019 presidential elections. The coordinators of the human rights platform monitor the observance of the electoral rights of citizens and also document violations made in the course of the electoral campaign.
